The point of music videos for films is to promote the film by using footage from the film into the video. Music videos in general have similar attributes when it comes to camera shots, location and clothing however when it comes to music videos for movies there are different ways in which they're locations and clothing are presented. Below are 2 films along with the music video for them. Each one is different in their own way however all together they have similar characteristics. Music videos for films incorporate the Andrew Goodwin Theory as they incorporate intertextual references to their films.
(Film - Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, Not So Good, Very Bad Day)
Location/Settings
within the music video there are more than 10 different locations including the footage from the actual film. The music video is set within a neighborhood mostly shot both in and outside the house. The use of this shows the audience how it relates to the film as its a family film. the locations corresponds with the film and interacts at the same time for example bringing the characters into the music video and not just posting footage. The activities within the music video interlinks with the film to show again the references back and forth. Because the locations reflect the song and the music the locations are everyday life situations in everyday life locations. The locations link to the costume again referencing to the everyday life situations they're not dressed up in brands or any sort just everyday comfortable wear. The locations used link to the genre of Pop because of the use of bright colours. The many different locations shown and the the speed of the editing.
Costume
When it comes to costume compared to other normal basic music videos there are less costume changes. The music video above have 2 costume changes as a band one for their activities inside or outside the house when its just footage and then another costume change for outside the house when singing to the cameras. The costume links to the verse-chorus-Verse structure as when it comes to the
chorus we see their more casual clothes when their outside the house whereas when it comes to verses its the different scenes in different situation so the costume is changed to fit the scene. All the costume shown link to the location, setting and lyrics. As the scenes are shown with the different activities they use Goodwin Theory as they illustrate the lyrics for example as they say "Tapping my shoes" we see a close up of the girl walking on the pavement. Usually with pop music videos there are many costume changes the costumes are bright and may be over the top however with music videos like theses its more about the performance than the song itself so it had to be relatable.
(Film - Starstruck)
Location/Settings

From picture on the wall to film footage |
Costume
With the main artist there are only 4 costume changes which is lower than average for a pop video. The artist is obviously young therefore flesh and skin wont be as shown. The costumes used don't really reflect the lyrics or the theme as its about being in the sunshine yet shes covered again because of her age. However there is a link to the verse-chorus-verse structure as when the chorus comes on there is a repetition of the same outfit only when another verse comes on and another costume change is made is when they start to input those scenes into the chorus to not over use the same scene as the audience can get bored easily.
